Safe now within Harga's sanctuary deep in the Dunderfosse, Gom is all set to a happy, secure life learning magic with her. All too he is whisked away with her into a eerie mist and forced to climb a perilous stair into a sky hall high above Ulm. Not only does he have the ordeal of climbing the stair alone, but at the top a strange being, Jastra,appears. He informs Gom that Harga is ordered away and that he must find another wizard master for himself.

  Harga bids Gom farewell, advises him to seek his master in Penlangoth, in the fisherman's quarter and names Folgan as the best choice. But Gom has other ideas. Folgan is harsh and cruel. He wants an easier ride. In Penlangoth, he stays in The Jolly Fisherman with Carrick & Essie, gets the password for his target master. He seems all set but a false friend upsets his plans. Only by some miracle can he redeem himself and fulfill Jastra's - and Harga's - expectations.
