Gom sets out to seek his wizard mother, knowing only that she was "Faraway," having only his native gifts and his staff - Stig's old walking stick. He does not get far before he is attacked by a vicious skull-bird - Katak - and barely escapes with his life. Throughout his quest to find Harga he makes good friends, not-so-good ones, and serious enemies. He also learns the hard way, much of the known world, and discovers in his naivite, both cunning and treachery.
